
Sophie Gerrard is a Scottish based award winning photographer specialising in long term contemporary documentary stories with strong environmental and social themes.
Sophie began her career in environmental sciences before studying photography in her home town at Edinburgh College of Art and completing an MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at The London College of Communication under the tutelage of Dr Paul Lowe.
Her work has been featured in The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Der Spiegel, Guardian and Financial Times weekend magazines as well as GQ, Harpers, Tatler, Smithsonian, Bloomberg Businessweek, GEO, New Statesman, Geographical, British Journal of Photography, Portfolio, Source and Foam.
Sophie is a recipient of the Jerwood Photography Award, a Fuji Bursary, the Grain Portfolio award, and Remote Festival prize, as well as having been nominated for the Prix Pictet 6 times.
In 2024 Sophie was commissioned by The Gaia Foundation and in 2023 by the Government Art Collection and her work has been exhibited widely in the UK and overseas, including The Martin Parr Foundation, the Scottish National Galleries, Impressions Gallery, Street Level Photoworks, The National Portrait Gallery, The Photographers’ Gallery, Museum Europäischer Kulturen Berlin, Format Festival, Rencontres D’Arles, Flowers East and Paris Photo.
Sophie’s work is held in a number of national and private collections including the National Galleries of Scotland, the University of St Andrews, Couttes bank and the Sir Elton John Collection.
She is a member of research staff at Edinburgh Napier University, an associate lecturer at The University of The Arts London, a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is a member of the board of trustees of Impressions Gallery and is represented by The Photographers’ Gallery in London.
